Riversport Rapids Whitewater Center is the first pumped-park design in the world that offers a recreational channel, a competition channel and a combined-flow freestyle channel in the same whitewater venue. The Whitewater Center is part of the larger OKC Boathouse District Campus, the headquarters for the USA Canoe and Kayak Federation, and is designated as a U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center.
S2O Design, the project lead, worked with the city and stakeholders to create a unique design and world-class venue that has the aesthetics and scale to blend into the existing Boathouse District Master Plan. An important design requirement was that the concrete channels (using over 11,000 cubic yards of concrete) be protected from degradation over time, limiting the need for costly fixes to damaged concrete.
The project lead chose Hycrete Endure WP for its proven waterproofing and corrosion protection. As an integral solution, Hycrete Endure WP provides protection for the life of the concrete and protects steel reinforcement by reducing water absorption, chloride penetration, and protecting the steel at its surface.
The whitewater park is permanently protected and the future costs for concrete maintenance have been eliminated for the life of the structure. Hycrete Endure WP was easily incorporated into the concrete mix and the owner has long-term waterproofing and corrosion protection.
