Waterproof Concrete Admixtures that Meet ASTM C1582 Standards

Hycrete admixtures achieved the highest performance ratings established by ASTM testing, setting the industry benchmark for concrete waterproofing. That includes the latest ASTM C1582 standard, which creates a specification for admixtures designed to inhibit chloride-induced corrosion of steel reinforcement within concrete.

Hycrete’s protective properties extend far beyond the concrete surface. Our admixtures are chemically engineered to form what we call a “liquid green bar” around internal rebar. Essentially, it’s a molecular barrier that acts as an extra wall of defense against chloride ingress, preventing rust and protecting the structural integrity of your project – as well as your long-term ROI.

An Overview of the ASTM C1582 Standard

The ASTM C1582 standard provides guidelines for chemical admixtures that are used in concrete to mitigate corrosion of steel reinforcement. Although this standard does not specifically focus on waterproof concrete, it plays a significant role in enhancing structural durability, specifically in terms of preventing chloride-induced corrosion – one of the major issues that often arises with water ingress.

Hycrete meets all ASTM C1582 as well as C1585 testing standards, which determines the rate of water absorption (sorptivity). Together, these standards demonstrate the comprehensive protection builders can achieve with Hycrete: superior performance that extends from the concrete surface down to the rebar.

The Basic Requirements of ASTM C1582:

  • Testing methods include electrochemical assessments of corrosion potential as well as real-world performance verification.
  • Admixtures must demonstrate effectiveness in reducing corrosion rates in steel-reinforced concrete.
  • Admixtures should not significantly alter workability, setting time, or compressive strength of the concrete mixture.

Hycrete: Helping Builders Meet ASTM Standards for 25+ Years

Tried, tested, and scientifically proven throughout the industry since 2003, Hycrete was designed in coordination with the strictest ASTM standards. Our waterproof concrete admixtures have helped construction projects worldwide design easier, build faster, and capitalize sooner – all with less risk, less maintenance, and less impact on the environment.

The Importance of Protecting Rebar from Chloride-Induced Corrosion

Carbonation-induced failure in concrete is a deterioration process that occurs when carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reacts with the calcium hydroxide commonly found in cement mixtures. The resulting chemical reaction forms calcium carbonate and reduces the pH of the concrete, creating an environment prone to more extensive rebar corrosion.

As concrete carbonation occurs, the pH of the concrete continues to decrease, becoming more acidic. This becomes a major issue for reinforced concrete structures that rely on steel passivation to prevent corrosion. The drop in pH disrupts the passivation of internal steel elements which leaves the reinforcement open to corrosion.
